An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated student to undertake a doctoral degree at The School of Human Sciences, the University of Western Australia (UWA; https://www.uwa.edu.au/schools/human-sciences) while embedded within the high-performance rowing program at the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS; https://wais.org.au/).

This project will combine biomechanics and advanced data analytics to investigate the factors influencing boat speed in elite rowing. The research will:

Integrate in-boat sensor data (acceleration and force) with mathematical modelling techniques, including Functional Data Analysis (FDA) and time-series analysis, to quantify relationships between technique, force production, propulsion, and speed.Examine the influence of external environmental conditions (wind, current, and water temperature) on boat speed and performance.

Applicants should hold a sports science, computer science, mathematics, or engineering-based bachelor’s degree with research-focused honours or a master’s qualification. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in biomechanics, computer vision, engineering, applied mathematics, or data science. Skills in statistics, programming, and time-series modelling are highly regarded.
