Title | Optimisation of Hybrid Living Shorelines using Hydrodynamic Thresholds and Positive Species Interactions |
---|---|
Course | Doctor of Philosophy |
Description | An exciting opportunity to undertake PhD research in the field of coastal engineering at the University of Western Australia (UWA). This project will develop innovative solutions to enhance coastal protection using hybrid living shorelines, which combine engineered structures with habitat-forming species such as mangroves, salt marsh and shellfish reefs. The research will incorporate laboratory (physical model) testing in UWA’s large-scale wave flume, with opportunities to also integrate numerical modelling and/or fieldwork.
The project is part of a broader multidisciplinary research initiative funded by the Australian Research Council that involves coastal engineers, ecologists, and oceanographers, and will provide opportunities to work closely collaborate with industry, government, and NGO partners. The research will contribute to development of practical guidelines that will support the design and implementation of nature-based methods for coastal protection that are in high demand worldwide. |
