| Project description | Recurrent stroke affects up to 5.7–17.7% of ischemic stroke survivors within 12 months, and second ischemic stroke incurs a heightened risk of disability or death. Reducing the risk of recurrence requires accurate subtype classification of the index stroke mechanism to guide secondary prevention therapies. Existing approaches to subtype classification are inaccurate and 33% - 53% of all ischaemic strokes, or 9%-24% of embolic ischemic strokes (embolic stroke of unknown source [ESUS]), remain unclassified. There is an urgent need to improve ischaemic stroke subtype classification. Cu-64 Fibrin Binding Peptide (FBP8) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a novel molecular imaging technique purposed for the detection of thrombus, anywhere in the body, in a single scan. We hypothesise that Cu-64 FBP8 PET can detect the source of embolus origin, correctly reclassify ischaemic stoke subtype, guide downstream investigations and direct secondary prevention strategies in patients with ESUS. We aim to test this hypothesis in a prospective cohort study. This PhD project involves working with a new radiopharmaceutical (FBP8) for the investigation of thrombus/thromboembolism origin in patients with ESUS., in a prospective clinical trial. This project also plans to use FBP8 to better understand other disease processes, related to clotting, and their treatments. |

| Description | The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a program of independent, supervised research that is assessed solely on the basis of a thesis, sometimes including a creative work component, that is examined externally. The work presented for a PhD must be a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, demonstrating mastery of the subject of interest as well as an advance in that field of knowledge. Visit the course webpage for full details of this course including admission requirements, course rules and the relevant CRICOS code/s. |
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a program of independent, supervised research and is assessed solely on the basis of a thesis. Visit the course webpage for full details of this course including admission requirements, course rules and the relevant CRICOS code/s. | |
