| Project description | This PhD project will work under the Future Fellowship project FT25010085 led by Emilie Dotte-Sarout, on anthracological analyses relating to the arid and semi-arid zones of WA. Samples and sites will be selected from legacy collections managed by UWA archaeology, including recent and ongoing research collaborations as part of ARC projects Desert People and Desert to the Sea (Lead CIs: Jo McDonald and Peter Veth at UWA). This include reference collection and ethnobotanical work in collaboration with Traditional Owners and Inidgenous ranger groups including Baiyungu, Thalanyji, Yinigurdira, Yinhawangka, East Guruma, Birriliburu, and Martu First Nations (across both projects). The aim is to produce a regional history of how people cared for Country and managed woody resources for domestic or specialised fire use throughout Australian precolonial history, across the western desert-pilbara arid zone. Refined theoretical perspectives and frames of interpretations will ne dot be developed by the PhD candidate, in collaboration with First Nation and other collaborators. |
