KeywordsRadio astronomy, galaxies, cosmology
Research areaPhysical Sciences
Project description

Intensity mapping is where radio telescopes are able to detect the combined 21-cm emission from galaxies at cosmological distance where detection of individual galaxies is too difficult. This project will use data from the new cryogenic phased array feed on the Parkes (Murriyang) radio telescope (which is partly funded by UWA) to detect this emission at redshifts up to 1. The goal is to measure the cosmic neutral hydrogen density at these redshifts, the cross-correlation with optical surveys, and features in the auto-pwer spectrum, possibly including baryonic acoustic oscillations and the turnover feature that arose at the epoch of matter-radiation equality.

Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a program of independent, supervised research that is assessed solely on the basis of a thesis, sometimes including a creative work component, that is examined externally. The work presented for a PhD must be a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, demonstrating mastery of the subject of interest as well as an advance in that field of knowledge.
