TitleDynamics of surface currents using drifters
SupervisorProf Charitha Pattiaratchi
CourseDoctor of Philosophy
Keywordsoceanography, surface currents, drifters
Categoriesoceanography
Research areaEarth Sciences
Project description

Surface circulation of the ocean (<15 m water depth) is primarily driven by winds and is a conduit for the transport of natural and anthropogenic buoyant material such as eggs and larvae of different organisms, plastics and dispersion of oil. UWA hasd deployed ~150 surface drifters in the the South-East Tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO), located between the Australian mainland and the Indonesian Archipelago.  This project will use this dataset inclusing additional drifter deployments to undestand the dynamics of the surface currents and their forcing mechanisms.
