TitlePhD Project - Advanced Data to Knowledge Platform
SupervisorDr Wei Liu
Research areaInformation and Computing Sciences
Project description

Recent advancements in data analytics, particularly in machine learning and artificial intelligence, have revolutionised the mining industry by enhancing the robustness and efficiency of data interpretation across the mining value chain. However, integrating and interoperability diverse data types and databases remain significant challenges for organisations. To address these challenges, this project proposes the development of an advanced data-to-knowledge platform within Research Program 6 (Data Analytics). This platform aims to facilitate the seamless transformation of data into trustworthy knowledge across the exploration, characterisation, and processing themes of the Industry Transformation Training Centre (ITTC).

At its core, the proposed platform leverages knowledge graph technology to establish relationships among disparate data sources and enable hierarchical insights retrieval. The platform, with its ability to accelerate scientific discoveries, enables intelligent data consumption and supports complex queries across siloed data repositories by integrating structured and unstructured data through semantic enrichment. This capability not only accelerates scientific discoveries but also enhances decision-making processes with explainable domain insights.

The project addresses several critical research questions:

1.        Geoscience Knowledge Graph Construction and Alignment: How can human knowledge and data-derived insights be integrated into a knowledge graph to facilitate trustworthy information retrieval and decision support across different data sources?

2.        Anomaly and Novelty Detection: How can anomaly detection techniques, such as variational autoencoders, be applied to uncover anomalous patterns in geological data across exploration, characterisation, and processing themes?

3.        Geoscience Knowledge Graph Refinement and Continuous Enrichment: How can inconsistencies and disagreements in geoscientific data interpretation be systematically addressed through continuous knowledge graph refinement and conflict resolution mechanisms?
